    It is placed upright as you show it at the aft end of the boom to hold it up when the ship is in harbor and sails are down and gathered. The main sheets are pulled tight to hold it in place, and sailors have space to pass from port to starboard underneath.
    Or ? Mystery part from an old sailboat. Handmade, out of wood. Measures approx. 71-1/8" Long, end to end. Open spacing area on end measures approx. 6-1/4" Across. Item is in ACCEPTABLE condition for its age. Has age wear, cracking, discoloration/ staining, and dust soiling. Sold as found. See pictures for details and condition. Pictures taken with flash.
