The enlisted man's olive-drab serge wool service cap as it appeared in 1940. Modifications were made to the service cap in 1934 resulting in the new specification 8-5E. The cap was given a slightly higher front rise, angled visor, and a wider chin strap. Later, in 1937 the wool serge material was darkened and a new domed cap device was developed. The expansion of mechanized, armored, and aviation units, plus the looming threat of war caused the Army to begin developing more practical headgear to replace the traditional service hat and cap. Thus, by the end of 1941, a number of new hats, caps, and helmets were being issued to combat and combat support units, and issue of the service cap became limited to service command and War Department overhead personnel. The service cap remained a popular component of the enlisted man's winter and summer uniforms throughout the WW2 period as many soldiers purchased them from retail outlets to wear while on leave.
