iPhone 17 leaks, tipped to get big upgrade in display

With the iPhone 16 series now available in India, attention is already shifting to next year’s iPhone 17, thanks to early leaks suggesting a major display upgrade. According to Ross Young, a reliable source for Apple display news, the iPhone 17 will feature ProMotion technology, which basically means 120Hz display. This feature was previously reserved for the Pro models and is now rumoured to make it to the standard models as well to provide a smoother scrolling and video playback experience, MacRumors reports.
This would mark a big upgrade for the standard iPhone models, which currently operate at a 60Hz refresh rate. The display could also ramp down to a more power-efficient rate when not in use, similar to the always-on feature in the Pro models.
The addition of ProMotion could prompt users to hold off on upgrading this year, as this display improvement was initially expected with the iPhone 16 series. With the iPhone 17 now tipped to include this long-awaited feature, potential buyers might wait for the 2025 release instead.
Young has a solid track record, having accurately predicted the iPhone 16 Pro’s larger 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays. While it’s unclear if the iPhone 17 will feature a 10Hz or 1Hz low-end refresh rate, the leap to ProMotion is enough to generate buzz. Apple is expected to officially unveil the iPhone 17 lineup in September 2025.
Next year, Apple is also said to introduce a new model, which will be called the “iPhone 17 Air.” It will reportedly be slimmer and also have a 120Hz display. The device is tipped to be a replacement for the Plus series. So, we might not see the iPhone 17 Plus model next year. The iPhone 16 Plus could be the last Plus model from Apple, unless the company decides to change its decision based on the current version’s sale demand.
